Madagascar, July 2025: Launch of a project to strengthen sustainable cage aquaculture practices
On 1st of July 2025, GIZ launched a project in Madagascar to reform the environmental regulatory framework for cage aquaculture, addressing gaps in biosecurity, animal health, and social impacts. Implemented under the GIZ global program "Sustainable Aquatic Foods," the project will focus on three key regions (Analamanga, Atsinanana, and Itasy), where cage farming is rapidly expanding.
Activities include revising outdated policies, designing practical monitoring protocols, and piloting them in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy (MPEB). Training for officials and awareness workshops for producers will ensure compliance with international standards (e.g. FAO, ASC). By March 2027, the project aims to institutionalise a new ministerial decree, fostering sustainable growth in this vital sector.
This initiative underscores Madagascar’s commitment to balancing economic development with environmental stewardship, ensuring aquaculture benefits both communities and ecosystems.
