Madagascar: Inland aquaculture sector review and elaboration of development plan (action plan)

Project Background

The project "Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture (GV Fish)" is part of the special initiative One World – No Hunger (SEWOH) of the German Ministry of economic cooperation and development. Under it the country package “Development of Sustainable Freshwater Aquaculture in Madagascar” (CP MAD), a study was launched after the revision of the SNDAM (National aquaculture development strategy) by COFAD for elaborating the development plan (action plan) of the inland aquaculture in Madagascar. 

Objectives

The main objective was setting up a development plan for inland aquaculture in Madagascar.

The specific objectives were: 

  • Establish the basis for the development of Inland Water Aquaculture
  • To improve the governance of Inland Water Aquaculture
  • Promote research and development of Inland Water Aquaculture

Activities and/or Results

  • Elaborated the methodology of the study
  • Conducted the literature review and policies summary
  • Elaborate a sectorial review
  • Conducted 5 consultative workshops across the country among the stakeholders
  • Performed a value chain analysis with mapping
  • SWOT analysis of the sector
  • Produced a sectorial report for the national inland aquaculture (tilapia, carp, sturgeon and algae)
  • Elaborated the draft of the action plan for the inland aquaculture
  • Organised an internal workshop for validation of the drafted action plan with the governmental authorities 
  • Finalised the action plan and presented it in a validation national workshop
