Western Indian Ocean, 2025: Implementation of Blue Economy for WE4D
After a successful inception phase COFAD has begun implementation of its planned interventions within the Blue Economies of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. This work is being done on behalf of GIZ as the Blue Economy component of the wider WE4D programme which is focused on addressing gender disparities in economic participation by promoting inclusive and sustainable development in green and green(ing) sectors of the economy.
As part of the project’s implementation, COFAD is taking an in-depth look at developing local capacities in maritime sectors such as seaweed farming, mangrove honey production, fish processing and plastics recycling. These sectors were identified during the inception phase as opportunities in the coastal regions of East Africa where the promotion of women’s involvement within the Blue Economy could be most effective. Through the provision of training and technical knowledge the project team hopes to promote interventions that address a wide array of themes related to coastal livelihoods such as improved working conditions, coastal safety, climate stressor response, business and entrepreneurial skills as well as product development. Key to the project’s success will be close cooperation with local partners and fostering positive relationships with rural communities along the coast.
