Uganda, December 2025: Strengthening commercial aquaculture in Uganda (SCA) - project launch
With funding from the Kingdom of the Netherlands via their Embassy in Kampala (EKN) the COFAD-led consortium (COFAD-ThinkAqua-WUR) is launching an ambitious aquaculture development project aimed at strengthening Uganda’s aquaculture sector. The project focuses on improving quality inputs, building technical capacity, enhancing market systems, enhancing access to finance, and creating an enabling environment for sustainable growth. The project begins with a 6-month inception phase, dedicated to detailed planning, stakeholder engagement, sector analyses and baseline assessments. From June 2026, full-scale implementation will commence, rolling out activities across five key components (to be refined during inception):
- Quality Inputs: Supporting selective breeding, feed development and input distribution.
- Capacity Building: Training farm/ers, institutions, and sector actors.
- Marketing & Post-Harvest: Developing cold chain systems and market linkages.
- Access to Finance: Facilitating blended financing, financial literacy and policy advocacy.
- Enabling Environment: Strengthening commercial associations and coordinating multi-stakeholder platforms for sector stakeholders.
Stay tuned for updates as we work together to strengthen Uganda’s aquaculture sector into a driver of economic growth, employment and food security.
